Your doctor has scheduled you to have a liver biopsy which is a diagnostic test that allows the doctor to examine the condition of your liver and a portion of your bile ducts by taking a small tissue sample of your liver with a biopsy needle. When performed by a specially trained physician, this is a safe and accurate way to determine the condition of your liver and bile ducts.

After preparing for your liver biopsy by fasting, you will report to the designated area, as discussed by your physician. You may not drive for 24 hours after your liver biopsy.

Please arrange another means of transportation.

Your liver biopsy will be done in an outpatient examination area in a hospital where a nurse will explain the procedure and give you an opportunity to ask questions before signing the consent form.

You will be lying on your back for this procedure. The doctor will find an appropriate site on your right side and sterilize the area. A local anesthetic will be administered by needle to this area to prevent pain. After breathing out and holding your breath for 1 to 2 seconds, the doctor will obtain a punch biopsy lasting 1 second. After the liver biopsy is complete, you will be on your right side for 4 hours to prevent bleeding. Before you are discharged, you will be given instructions regarding regarding problems to be aware of after the procedure, diet, activity, medications, and follow up appointments if needed.

After your liver biopsy, you should not expect to be uncomfortable - but If you experience these symptoms: persistent abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, rectal bleeding, bloody urine, fever, nausea or vomiting, trouble breathing, or dizziness, you should contact your doctor immediately. HOW TO PREPARE FOR YOUR LIVER BIOPSY

1. For an AM procedure, no food or drink after midnight the night before the biopsy.
2. For a PM procedure, no food or drink after 8am the day of the biopsy.
3. No aspirin or anti-inflammation medications (e.g. Advil, Motrin, Aleve) 7 days before.
4. If you are taking insulin, diabetes medication, blood pressure medication, tranquilizers, coumadin, or other blood thinners, you will receive special instructions.
5. Your doctor may order special blood tests or x-rays. A prescription will be given to you in the office. If your insurance requires that you must use a certain lab, you should check with them BEFORE having the tests done.
